With fresh snow comes the urge to get outside and do something fun. Even if we have to stay inside, we really could use an activity to keep ourselves active. It’s important to exercise and keep our bodies moving during the colder days of the year. The good news? There are so many great activities–both indoors and outdoors–that promote good joint health and that are fun, too!

Outdoor Activities

Snowshoeing: This is a low-impact activity that can provide a good cardiovascular workout while being easy on the joints. The use of snowshoes makes certain paths safer to traverse, too, as it becomes easier to walk across snow.

Cross-country skiing: Like snowshoeing, cross-country skiing is a low-impact activity that can provide a good cardiovascular workout while being easy on the joints. It’s a great way to enjoy the outdoors, keep your body active, and participate in a seasonal activity. Not only that, but it’s possible that a place to cross-country ski isn’t too far from where you live (don’t forget to bring the dog along!).

Ice skating: Ice skating can be a fun way to get some exercise during the winter months. It's a good way to strengthen your legs and core while also being easy on the joints. This could also be a really nice activity to do with friends or that special someone.

Snowball fights: Playing in the snow and having a snowball fight can be a fun way to get some exercise and keep your joints moving. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t want a reason to throw a snowball at your family member or friend? Set the clock for three minutes: The snowball fights will start whether you’re ready or not!

Sledding: Sledding can be a fun and exhilarating way to get some exercise during the winter months. Not only is it fun, but the walk back up the hill is a great way to keep your legs moving through cardio.Just be sure to use proper form and technique to protect your joints, and only sled in areas where it's safe to do so.

Indoor Activities

Yoga: Practicing yoga can help to improve flexibility, balance, and strength, all of which can help to protect your joints.

Warm water exercise: Exercising in a warm water pool can be a great way to get some exercise while also being easy on the joints. The buoyancy of the water can help to take some of the weight off of your joints.

General Tips to Keep your Body Healthy

  1. Dress warmly: Wear layers to keep your joints warm and flexible. Remember, cold joints become stiff and are prone to injury!

  1. Exercise regularly: Exercise can help improve flexibility and reduce joint stiffness. Any one of the above activities are excellent ways to achieve daily exercise.

  1. Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water to keep your joints lubricated. Besides, who can turn down an ice-cold sip of water?

  1. Eat a healthy diet: A healthy diet can help reduce inflammation and improve joint health. Especially with all of this fun exercise, eating well will keep your body happy.

  1. Protect your joints: Avoid activities that put unnecessary strain on your joints, such as lifting heavy objects or participating in high-impact sports. If you’re going to do these activities, be sure to stretch before and after and use proper technique to avoid strains, slips, or falls. Be thoughtful and careful about the activities you do this time of year.

  1. Stay active: Try to stay active, even in cold weather. Go for a walk or do some stretching to keep your joints moving! If you have to stay inside, do calming activities like yoga to keep you busy. For example, our marketing team took up videography! They even created an interactive video software for production companies and freelancers.

  1. Use heat therapy: Heat therapy can help improve circulation and reduce joint stiffness. Try using a heating pad or warm water bottle to apply heat to your joints. This will feel especially great after a nice time outside!

Remember to always listen to your body and take breaks if you need to! It's also a good idea to talk to your doctor before starting any new exercise routine. Despite the cold weather, there are plenty of ways to have fun and promote good joint health at the same time.
